Students in years 7-9 completed a 20 metre sprint, shuttle run or yoyo test, a standing vertical jump and an agility test to measure their speed, power and aerobic capacity.
Sports Industry Program facilitator Iain Jackson said the 67 students completed the testing at Warrnambool’s Deakin University using specialist fitness equipment.
He said the session was “full on” and students went well despite the hot weather conditions.
Mr Jackson said the students would analyse their results and assess their strengths and areas to develop. “Part of it was to give them the experience of using high level testing equipment rather than being about results,” Mr Jackson said. “They’ll be re-tested at the end of the year to see if they’ve had any development.”
He said Deakin University exercise science facility staff conducted the session using fitness testing equipment from their Waurn Ponds campus.
Students also heard from Deakin University exercise science facility lecturer Ryan Worn who is the 200 metre Australian track cycling record holder.
Worn shared how he spent two years in a wheelchair, as a child, after a trampolining accident. He began riding an exercise bike for rehabilitation later went on to represent Australia. “His message was about overcoming adversity and using sport as a platform to improve his life.”
They also heard from Tracy Smith from From the Feet Up Sports Clinic about the importance of wearing appropriate footwear while training.
