Hamilton police Sergeant Rex Habel said the man was crushed by the ramp on a low loader which pinned one of his legs.
State Emergency Service volunteers freed the man after the accident happened just before 11am at a Coleraine Road industrial site.
His condition was stablised by ambulance officers, he was taken by road ambulance to Meville Oval and then flown by the HEMS4 helicopter to a Melbourne hospital.
He was in a serious condition due to blood loss and injuries to his leg.
