HAMPDEN league boasts 10 of the 24 players picked in a Greater Western Victoria Rebels’ under 16 squad.

South Warrnambool quartet Fraser Marris, Marcus Herbert, Flynn Atchison and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, Warrnambool quartet Ben Howard, Robert Goldstraw, Zacc Dwyer and Patrick Rea, Koroit’s Clem Nagorcka and Hamilton Kangaroos’ Kobi Walter will play in the AFL Victoria Country Challenge Series.

Warrnambool and District league duo Jett Bermingham (Dennington) and Ned Payne (Kolora-Noorat) and West Portland junior Toby Jennings were also picked for the three-game series, which starts on Sunday, March 18.

Warrnambool committee member James Mahony said the Blues’ quartet had potential.

Goldstraw is a six-foot-three ruckman, Dwyer the son of former Fitzroy footballer Mark and Howard the son of Warrnambool premiership player Brendan.

“Robert, I can see him developing into a really good player,” Mahony said.

“He’s the good, old-fashioned tap ruckman who is a really good feeder of the ball.

“Zacc has very good skills and is very hard at the ball. He’s a really good in and under type of player and racks up possessions.

“Ben’s a really raw talent. He’s got good goal sense and his marking has improved over time.

“He’s got a lot of potential given his height, he’s six-foot-four now.

“All three of them are really good lads from good families who have been connected to the club in years gone by.

“Patrick is a fast moving forward with great all-round skills.”

AFL Victoria Country Challenge Series wraps up with a country triple-header on Friday, April 6 at Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth Oval.
