Sergeant Danny Brown from Terang police said the crash was “high impact” and any passengers in the vehicle would have been seriously hurt.
He said the car was reported as stolen from outside a McKinnon Street home between 10pm on Saturday and 7.30am on Sunday.
“It had a high impact collision into a tree on the Cobden/Terang Road, Terang only 200 metres form McKinnon Street,” he said.
“The impact was hard enough to write-off the vehicle and I believe if had there been a passenger in the front they would have sustained serious injuries.
“Warrnambool Crime Scene Unit officers will examine the car for any forensic evidence.”
Sergeant Brown urged anyone with information to contact police.
