Nine others were taken to hospital after an eight-lane road caved in above an under-construction subway line in Foshan City, Guangdong province, on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported.
The injured people were in a stable condition, authorities said. One person was still missing.
According to a preliminary investigation, the collapse was caused by a sudden flood that occurred at the construction site. The collapsed area was about the size of two basketball courts and about seven metres deep, state broadcaster CGTN said.
A large pit filled with mud, water, trees and street lights had formed. Authorities suspended water and power lines and dammed rivers during the ongoing rescue efforts.
