The Nirranda export learned he’d been promoted to Geelong’s top-tier side after a phone call from club coach Andre Borovec on Wednesday evening.
“He called me about midday and said they were going to pick me, and I just picked up the phone and rang mum and dad straight away,” the 18-year-old told The Standard.
“It’s pretty bloody exciting. I didn’t expect it at all. It’s just pretty awesome to have the chance.”
It came just four days after Couch, alongside fellow south-west exports Lachie Wareham and Matt Gunther, helped Geelong to a one-day trophy in the third division.
Couch snared 2-16 and contributed 16 from number four.
The Emmanuel College student said he relishing the challenge of rising through the grades.
“The speed of the opening bowlers isn’t that different through the grades but the accuracy just moves up,” Couch said.
“You’re never getting loose balls to hit in the higher grades.
“Teams tend to have more batting depth too. It’s just been a great challenge for me.”
Couch revealed he was keeping a cool head leading into the clash with Ringwood at Kardinia Park.
“It’s a bit surreal but I’m trying to treat it as another game,” he said.
“There’s a lot of talented players around though and it’s exciting to play.”
