While the crowd of about 10,000 watched the race, the money sat unsupervised in a locked room in the pit area for just six minutes – enough time for the culprit to commit a crime that stunned the club and the community.
Police worked solidly on the case and spent years following up all leads, but found all were a dead end.
Despite the trail going cold, retired detective Fred Hughson said the unsolved robbery was still an open file.
“It’s still a cold case at the police station. If something came up they’d be ready to go,” he said.
“Someday someone might talk.”
While talk of the Australia Day robbery died down, there are those who never forgot and are still traumatised by the events of that night.
