The Happy Ukes, a band of ukulele-playing buskers, has been entertaining lunchtime crowds after answering a call from Warrnambool City Council for performers to liven up Liebig Street during the holiday season.
With renditions of golden oldies like You Are My Sunshine and I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts, the buskers have drawn appreciative audiences and generous donations.
Group spokesperson Anne Rea said money collected from the performances would be donated to the Warrnambool and District Community Hospice whose hospice-in-the-home service allows terminal patients the option to die at home.
Mrs Rea said the group of about 14, members of the Warrnambool Ukulele Group, enjoyed seeing positive reactions from shoppers.
“It makes people very happy and it’s great to see their lovely, smiling faces as they’re walking towards us.”
