It may not quite be Rod Laver Arena, but comedian Dave Hughes was only too happy to take part in a celebrity match for the grand opening of Port Fairy’s new tennis courts.

Hughes, who grew up in Warrnambool, joked that the matches were a warm-up for his upcoming Australian Open celebrity games later this month. “It’s like a qualifying match for me, so I need to win,” he said.
Moyne Shire councillor Jordan Lockett also took to the court for the celebrity match. “He definitely had the upper hand on the day,” Cr Lockett said, despite admitting that he’d given Hughes an old wooden racket from the 1970s to play with.
He said about 100 people turned out for the official opening of the “world class facilities”.
