Detective Senior Constable Peter-Jon Wellington, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, on Friday gave evidence at the bail application of 22-year-old Portland man Jake Poole.
He told the Warrnambool Magistrates Court the victim underwent surgery in Warrnambool after being stabbed in the leg, stomach and groin to repair a lacerated liver and a significant wound to the victim’s penis.
He said the victim was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a potentially life-threatening and critical condition where he underwent further surgery.
The police officer said the victim was still recovering with the aid of a colostomy bag, he may need further surgery and it was not sure if he would regain the full use of his penis.
Barrister Rachel Waters said her client had been medically assessed and may be suffering a fractured eye socket and nose.
She said he had also been prescribed antibiotics for an eye infection and the defence of self-defence may be open to him.
Mr Poole had spent 30 days in custody and a committal mention has been scheduled on February 9 next year.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said if a trial was to be held it may not happen next year, Mr Poole had few prior court appearances and a positive Court Integrated Service Program report had been received.
Ms Toose granted bail until February 9 with a wide range of conditions.
Mr Poole has to report to the Portland police station on Wednesdays, live at Portland’s Bennett Street with his mother, not leave Victoria or Australia, obey a 9pm to 6am curfew, not use drugs and not come to Warrnambool except for appointments.
He been charged with six offences including intentionally causing serious injury.
Previously Detective Senior Constable Wellington said Mr Poole had been house sitting his sister's home in Warrnambool’s McGregors Road mid last month.
At 1.30am the victim went to McGregors Road and told Mr Poole he was owed money by the residents.
He was grabbed by the throat and threatened.
Mr Poole claims items including keys and a mobile phone containing photos of his daughter were missing.
He said he then got hold of a 30cm knife, didn't know where the victim lived, got his sister's dog and the dog led him 850 metres to the victim's home in Glenrowe Avenue.
There was a scuffle and the victim suffered significant injuries.
