A new $330,000 interactive war memorial will provide recognition to veterans post World War I.
Funding the project, which will include an interactive touchscreen providing information on Warrnambool and Moyne servicemen and women, remains a major concern for those involved.
With that in mind, the RSL is launching a community fund-raising drive that it hopes will raise $100,000 in public donations to get the unique project off the ground.
The public can help the RSL reach the target through a direct donation to the Warrnambool RSL sub-branch, or at the project’s account set up at South West Credit.
RSL member Vern Robson said those behind the project were heartened by the in-kind support that had already been offered to the construction of the memorial and the way Warrnambool City Council and Moyne Shire had supported the plan.
“The co-operation we’ve had from them has been outstanding, it’s great to see the two councils working together,” he said.
The state government has contributed $80,000 to the project, the federal government announced last week it would contribute $14,797 so far through its Veteran and Community Grants program. As well as providing the site, Warrnambool City Council is also contributing financially, and the sub-branch itself is also helping fund the development.
As part of the design, families will also have the chance to get their loved ones’ names etched in stone through an engraved pavers project.
Pavers would be engraved with a veteran’s name and serial number.
The pavers can be bought for $50 each. Because of space constraints, numbers are limited.
People have until January 31 next year to register to be a part of the pavers project.
