Jamie Cameron, 42, of Crawley Street, Warrnambool, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to recklessly causing injury and breaching a court order.
Cameron has already served 50 days in custody which will be counted as served and deducted from his new four-month jail term.
Police said the couple had been in an on-off relationship for 14 years.
On the night of August 27 the woman was watching football on television when Cameron asked her to turn it off so he could go to sleep.
She refused and Cameron punched her to the head, face, hip and back.
The woman suffered bruising and soreness.
A couple of days later she asked police to remove Cameron from her home and made a complaint about the assault.
She said she had been fearful to go to police before then.
Defence counsel Jack Rabl said his client had been in the same position before involving matters of violence and the same victim.
He said that Cameron had an acquired brain injury which was getting worse over time due to accidents and substance abuse.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said Cameron was jailed for 35 days earlier this year and other corrections orders had been put in place in the past.
She said that almost every year, and sometimes twice a year, Cameron offended and appeared in court.
The magistrate warned Cameron that if he kept offending the jail terms would just keep getting longer and longer.
