Merchant Navy took his record to four wins from four starts in defeating Booker and Muraahib in the group 3 race over 1200 metres.
Maher’s other star colt Jukebox, who has won his only three starts is set to have his next run in the $250,000 group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington on September 16.
The former Emmanuel College student who is one of Australia’s top young trainers said it’s great to have two such promising young horses in the stable.
“Merchant Navy is an exciting colt,” he said. “He’s got a great record and you love to see them resume like he did. He was very raw as a two-year-old but he’s now furnished into a more rounded racehorse. Jukebox has trained on well since his first-up win and we’re looking forward to the Danehill.”
Merchant Navy will head to Sydney for his next start in the $1million Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill on September 23 before running in the $2million Caulfield Guineas on October 14.
