The service, marking the 51st anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, was held at the veteran’s memorial in Warrnambool.
Vietnam Veteran’s Association Warrnambool president and secretary Don Roberts gave a moving speech.
“This year is a major milestone for veterans,” he said. “It marks 30 years since the welcome home march in Sydney. Reports from the day said many veterans were stunned by the depth of feeling in the public response.”
Veteran Pete Bird was 21 when he went to Vietnam in 1971 as a radio operator.
He said a highlight was working for the 1ATF commander.
