Detective Senior Constable Tim Chester, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, said the thefts happened at a Ballater Street address during the past two weeks while the owner had been away.
"Two rifles were taken from a locked cabinet which was forced open - a .243 Remington and a Marlin 175," he said.
"It's a major concern for everyone in the community when firearms are stolen as they could be used for illegal purposes."
Detective Senior Constable Chester requested that anyone with information contact the Portland police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
