Mrs Britnell’s comments come after taxi drivers warned of public safety concerns regarding the removal of security guards from the rank.
They are also concerned about their own safety, and damage to vehicles.
Drivers from 13 CABS Warrnambool will be instructed not to collect passengers after the security ends on June 30.
“The supervised taxi rank is an important community safety feature and it must continue,” Mrs Britnell said.
“Having a visible presence is vital to reducing the risk of public disorder. CCTV plays a role but it cannot replace feet on the street.”
Mrs Britnell said having security guards at the taxi rank ensured there was an orderly and safe way for people to get home on a Saturday night and also provided extra security for taxi drivers.
Police say crime in the Gilles Street area is down 35 per cent, and CCTV cameras are working.
They have warned they will still be on patrol in the area on Saturday nights.
Senior Sergeant Shane Keogh asked revellers to be responsible for their own behaviour.
Mrs Britnell said Warrnambool was facing increasing rates of crime, particularly assaults which were up 54 per cent.
She said the supervised taxi rank in Gilles Street played an important role in supporting police in their work to combat crime.
“I urge the Warrnambool City Council to reconsider this move,” Mrs Britnell said.
“I’m prepared to work with the council to help find a solution to this problem.”
