Warrnambool midfielder Jackson Bell kicked the Bottle Greens’ second goal of the fourth term – one of their five in an final flurry – to wrest momentum from South East at Casey Fields.
Bell, 22, said he was pleased to play a role in the 13.19 (97) to 12.7 (79) win and ensure Jonathan Brown started his coaching career on a high note.
“I struggled in the third quarter and Browny came out and said we’ve got to lift, so that was the aim and we had a good last quarter,” he said.
“I tried to use a bit of run and carry and take the game on, that was Browny’s message.”
Bell said he was aware of the importance of his final-term shot at goal.
“I tried to take my time and make sure it went through,” he said.
Bell, who trains greyhounds for a hobby, said winning an interleague match at an unfamilar ground was exciting.
He hopes it is a stepping stone to higher-ranked AFL Victoria community championship status in coming seasons.
“It’s massive. Halfway through the game when they were up, you’ve got that mindset where you don’t want to lose because Browny is so behind it all,” he said.
AFL great Brown praised Bell for his consistency and application.
“He was tireless all day in the midfield and was really classy and clean with his disposal all day,” he said.
