Kym Bingham was waiting for her son Jake, 12, to finish a tutoring session at Kip McGrath when a man tried to get into her car.
She said she felt lucky all the doors except for the driver’s side door were locked.
"He was saying ‘let me in, let me in,” Mrs Bingham said.
A number of other witnesses said the man was hurling abuse at people who walked by.
Police attended the scene and attempted to handcuff him.
He resisted and was subdued with capsicum spray.
A large knife in the man’s possession was placed into a brown paper bag by police.
