COBDEN karting prodigy Rusty Ponting dreams of competing on Florida’s world-famous Daytona Beach NASCAR circuit.
But for now, the seven-year-old South West Kart Club member is happy making waves on the state stage.
Ponting clinched victory in round one of the Victorian Karting Championship’s cadet nine class on the weekend, punching the air at the finishing post.
More than 196 entrants took part in racing at the Puckapunyal meeting.

Ponting’s father, Warren, said his son showed strong determination to secure the win after spinning out early on.
He said while his son had genuine potential in any form of motorsport, it was hoped he would take up sprintcar racing as he approached adulthood.
“He wants to do NASCAR, you know how kids have their dreams,” Warren said.

“It’d be nice to see him progress into sprintcars because you can do well locally here.
“You can’t race (sprintcars) until you’re 16 so he’s got a while to make up his mind just yet.”
South West Kart Club will host round two of the Victorian Country Series from April 22 to 23.
