The senior component of the championships kicks off Thursday, with the group of 16 Warrnambool representatives looking to carry on the good work of the juniors and masters, who competed earlier in the week.
Conor Cook led the way, qualifying for the under 15 boys board final and finishing ninth overall after making it through the first round, quarter- and semi-finals.
“He made the under 14 board final last year, so to back it up and make the under 15 final, he’s done really well,” Warrnambool coach Stephen Kerr said. “It’s a great effort to make the final.”
Warrnambool has high hopes for its board relay teams, while Matt Hardiman and Paddy Carr (under 19 boys) could be well in the mix for individual success.
The under 17 boys, led by the likes of Paddy O’Brien and Brayden Casamento, and open competitors Jane McMeel and Sophie Thomas are also chasing success.
“(With the board relay teams) we’re really hopeful and confident that, on their day, they can get through the finals and do quite well, but it all depends on luck on the day,” Kerr said. “Last year was the first time for a number of the competitors, so this season has all be about building towards this.”
