Andrew and Mathew Gay will compete at a Warrnambool and District Drag Racing Association event on Sunday, having spent the past 12 months upgrading their respective cars.
Mathew, 24, said the sport was a family affair.
“We’ve both raced together since I was 18,” he said.
“It is a bonding time, that’s why I enjoy it, it gives us something to do together.
“We’ve raced against each other a few times and we’re even at the moment.
“Hopefully we line up against each other and see who gets down the track quicker.”
Mathew said drag racing “always caught my eye”.
“As soon as I was 16 I bought the car I race now,” he said.
“It was going to be a street car but as soon as I turned 18 I turned it into a drag car.”
The Koroit-based pair are unsure how their revamped cars will fare the first time around.
Mathew, a chef at family business Alex’s, said the changes to his 1980 VC Commodore included an increase in horsepower.
“We’ve rebuilt the car; (it’s about) being able to take the grunt,” he said.
“It’s been a slow build. Me and one of my mates started it in April last year and had to save up to do it as well.
“We’ll probably test and tune it and see what it does and see if we need to make any adjustments.”
Mathew said Andrew would also use the meeting to iron out any issues with his new car.
