Tatnell started the A-Main on pole but found himself locked in a battle with American Brad Sweet for much of the 30-lap final.
“It’s the first year without our car owner (Shane Krikke). He loved this race,” he said.
“I got him his one and only classic. There are some very special people up there cheering us on.”
The race was incident-free – a stark contrast to the crash-filled heats – completed in six minutes and 49 seconds.
Another three-time champion, Sydneysider Kerry Madsen, finished third after clocking fastest time in qualifying. Grant Anderson worked his way from ninth to finish fourth.
