Before we can reopen the bridge we first need to address safety issues associated with the bridge railing.
- Scott Cavanagh
The bridge was closed in September due to water and flood debris putting the ageing bridge structure under pressure.
A post-flood investigation revealed no new structural damage as a result of the high Hopkins River levels, however, it did identify deterioration of existing structural issues and new safety issues with the bridge railing.
Warrnambool City Council city infrastructure director Scott Cavanagh said the closure of the bridge – which already had a load limit applied to it – provided council an opportunity to examine the entire structure.
“Before we can reopen the bridge we first need to address safety issues associated with the bridge railing,” he said.
“We also need to engage with the community about the bridge’s capacity and function as a pedestrian and road linkage.”
A community engagement process will commence next month.
