The Warrnambool Seahawks championship-winning guard has carried his Big V form into NBL ranks, dropping career-best numbers in the opening month of the season.
Sobey, who spent the off-season fine-tuning his game with the Seahawks, is being touted as one of the competition’s most improved players.
He’s played starring roles in Adelaide’s past three games, dropping a combined 51 points against Melbourne United, Brisbane and Cairns.
He started against the Taipans on Friday night for just the second time in his fledgling career and played a personal-best 35 minutes as the 36ers improved their record to 3-2.
“I feel good. I am glad I am getting the opportunity to go out there and get minutes as well,” Sobey said.
“I definitely thought I was ready (to take the next step). I thought I had a good off-season and was ready to go.
“Every time I get on court I am ready to go and give 100 per cent.”
Sobey, who is averaging 21 minutes’ court time and 14 points a game, is teaming with league leading scorer Jerome Randle to run the Adelaide offence.
He said it was exciting working alongside the diminutive import in the one and two spots.
“We are really enjoying playing both positions,” he said.
“We can share that load.”
Sobey said American Terrance Ferguson, who at 18 is the youngest import in league history, was also making his mark at the 36ers.
“He is super athletic and has huge potential,” he said.
“He is a draft pick in the coming year for the NBA and that’s pretty exciting.”
Adelaide boasts the youngest roster in the eight-team NBL competition and is playing without its injured skipper Mitch Creek, who is expected to miss up to six more weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.
Sobey said that inexperience meant the 36ers would endure highs and lows throughout the 2016-17 season. They found themselves facing large deficits against Melbourne United and Brisbane but showed determination to claw back in both contests.
They fell short against United and stunned the Bullets to claim an overtime win on the road.
“It is good to see we never give up but hopefully we don’t get in those situations too much,” Sobey said.
“But it is basketball and teams are going to make runs.”
