For three quarters, Old Collegians matched the winners perfectly. But in the last term Dennington’s superior fitness and sheer determination to win carried them 26 points clear.
It was a popular win and a personal triumph for captain-coach Bill Abbott, who topped a great first-up coaching effort when deemed among the best and most inspiring men afield.
The “fitting grand final” was fast and hard and marked by several brilliant flashes of teamwork and some equally classy individual efforts.
Until Old Collegians ran out of puff, both sides showed premiership qualities – especially the ability to fight back under pressure.
