A GoFundMe campaign has been started for Traill Dowie, who is in the Austin hospital following “an iatrogenic injury causing heart failure”, which he suffered following surgery earlier this month in Melbourne.
After the surgery, Dowie was discharged to the Warrnambool Base Hospital, where staff saved his life when he suffered heart failure. He was stabilised and flown back to Melbourne.
Dowie, a martial arts instructor, is expecting a child with his fiancee Tammie in about six months time.
The GoFundMe page said Dowie was minutes from death and the fundraising campaign aims to help with “the financial strain this injury will place upon his family … as he is the sole income provider”.
“This fund has been created to assist a man that has always been there for everyone else in need, who has always stood firm in all our corners, both within the ring and outside of it,” the page states.
The campaign passed its initial goal of $10,000 in less than 24 hours.
It was since accumulated about $24,000 in two days.
