Mott partnered Arch Fire to an easy win against four rivals in a steeplechase trial at Warrnambool on Tuesday.
The talented horseman said Arch Fire appreciated the bigger fences.
"He's a very good hurdler with a couple of features to his name, but he might be a better steeplechaser,” Mott said.
“I was very impressed how he jumped the fences. He's ready to run a big race in the Thackeray."
The Robert Smerdon-trained Arch Fire has won five of his nine hurdle starts.
Thubiaan, trained by top jumps trainer Eric Musgrove, will miss the Thackeray Steeplechase after running in the Great Eastern, Brierly and Grand Annual Steeplechase races over the past few months.
