The Warrnambool College Year 12 Student was elected to the role this week and says it’s a big honour to be chosen as the city’s youth leader.
Tom O’Sullivan, the city’s 2016 young citizen of the year, was elected deputy.
Gabby is beginning her third year on youth council and said it was a great way for young people from different school to have an influence in the broader community.
“It’s very special to be able to be a part of it,” she said.
“Our focus (for the coming year) will be on education and VCE attainment, which ties in with the school retention work happening around the region.
“It’s good to be working on a project we are all passionate about.
“There are no simple solutions, but we will tackle it bit by bit.”
Mayor Kylie Gaston congratulated Gabby on her new role.
“It’s great to have a new Youth Mayor and I’m confident that Gabby will do a great job,” she said.
“It’s fantastic that we have a driven Youth Council to represent and provide a voice for the youth of our city.
“The Youth Council does a lot of work throughout the year that many in the community may not know about, but it makes a big difference in the lives of the region’s young people.”
The 2016 Warrnambool City Youth Council is made up of people aged 12-25 from Warrnambool College, Brauer College, Emmanuel College, King’s College and Warrnambool City Council.
