Sergeant Mark Phillips said police arrested a Hamilton man who spent Saturday night in the cells after allegedly kicking and kneeing the uniformed officer. The man also resisted arrest.
Sergeant Phillips said police were speaking to another man on an unrelated incident when the attack occurred.
The 20-year-old approached police and, after being informed he would be arrested for drunkenness, attacked and injured the officer.
Police interviewed the man this morning.
He was bailed and will face a number of charges, including assaulting police, when he fronts court in May.
