THE closure of Warrnambool’s Deakin University would have “hard and far reaching” impacts, Commerce Warrnambool president Karen Foster says.
The reformed business lobby group added its voice to the chorus of community leaders backing the retention of a university campus.
Ms Foster said it was imperative for the local economy a university was retained.
“Deakin Uni contributes more than $50 million into our regional economy and generates an equivalent 380 or so full-time jobs,” Ms Foster said.
She said Deakin ensured businesses had access to a “home-grown workforce”.
“It’s just so important for our city that we have a university campus here,” she said.
“Unfortunately, I suspect that many people have simply taken that for granted. But now that we have reached a crisis point, my colleagues and I call on all Warrnambool businesses to stand up and fight.”
