Today will see the last Twenty20 qualifying round with semi-finals and the final to be played on Sunday.
West Warrnambool and Allansford have a two-point break in the Hopkins conference with Merrivale and Port Fairy, who play each other today, hot on their heels just two points behind. The Panthers will take on Brierly-Christ Church while the Gators will start favourites against Wesley-CBC.
Nestles and Nirranda are two points clear of the pack in the Merri conference but need to win to assure their semi-final place. Nestles has a tough away game against third-placed Nirranda while Woodford welcomes Russells Creek to Jack Keane Oval. East Warrnambool-YCW is within two points of the top two and needs to defeat Dennington to keep its hopes alive.
His team may be one of the few that cannot make it to the Twenty20 final but Russells Creek captain Paul Walker said there is still plenty to play for.
“We are working towards getting in a good position to have a real crack at the big prize at the end of the season,” Walker said.
“There is two points up for grabs that count on the overall ladder and in an even season like this every point counts.
“I’m looking forward to taking on Woodford, they are the benchmark of the competition.”
Russells Creek will take some confidence into the game having tied with Woodford when the two met in a one-day game in round eight. A large number of Russells Creek’s young guns will be match hardened having just come off Country Week commitments.
“I think playing all week will be good for the young lads,” Walker said.
“They have been up against the best of their peers and they have all been in good touch.”
