Ms Newton and Mr Chislett were paired up as part of the L2P Learner Driver Program, which teams L-platers with experienced drivers so they can get to 120 hours behind the wheel.
“I don’t have much family in Warrnambool – my older sister is here but she’s also on her L’s,” Ms Newton explained.
“Garry’s a good mentor. I’ve found when I’ve done something wrong in the car, he’s never yelled or gotten angry – he’s just been there to help me and guide me.”
The program is run in Warrnambool and Moyne Shire and more mentors are being sought ahead of a training session in November.
“I had some spare time and I thought, I’ve gone through my life and haven’t done any volunteering before, but this was something I could possibly do,” Mr Chislett said.
