For the third season in a row the Port Fairy Cricket Club has been chosen to host Victorian Premier Cricket.
On Saturday October 24 Footscray Edgewater will play Prahran at Avery’s Paddock in a 50-over a side one-day game.
Former Australian one-day player David Hussey has played the last two games for Prahran and may be a chance to be part of the action in Port Fairy.
Last season Melbourne University played Northcote at Port Fairy.
Northcote won the game on the back of a standout performance from all-rounder Marcus Stoinis who made 113 and took 4-37.
Leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed took 3-32 for Melbourne University.
Both Stoinis and Ahmed went on to bigger things, Ahmed was part of the 2015 Ashes squad while Stoinis made his international one-day debut for the Aussies.
Port Fairy Cricket Club president Damian Gleeson said having premier cricket back was a huge boost for the local cricketing community.
“It’s a great opportunity for cricket lovers to witness just how good this standard of cricket is,” Gleeson said.
“Not only is it brilliant to sit back and watch but for all the young players in the area it is a chance to see what they have to do to get to this level.
“Watching these games the last few years, these players make very few mistakes, they know the value of every run and every ball.”
Last year a full round of Warrnambool and District Cricket Association (WDCA) games were held on the same day as the premier cricket match.
But this season the WDCA has moved its round of matches to the Sunday, a move applauded by Gleeson.
“A big pat on the back to the WDCA for clearing the decks on the Saturday so the local blokes can come over and watch what will be a great spectacle,” Gleeson said.
“As we have seen, these boys are not far off playing for their country so it is great to have them down our way and showing what they can do.”
It will the second occasion Footscray Edgewater has played at Port Fairy, the first was for a Twenty20 game against Essendon back in 2013-14.
The visit had a positive impact on Footscray Edgewater.
“They enjoyed it so much here last time they requested to come back,” Gleeson said.
“It is a credit to blokes at our club like Wally Sheehan, Bob Dwyer and Geoff Coxall who work so hard to have the ground and the facilities in such great order.”
