As part of Muscular Dystrophy Australia's National Superhero Week, year 11 student Bonnie McKenzie, 17, said she and her friends were collecting change and running a sausage sizzle to raise $300 for the hereditary condition.
“MD gets put under the shadow of a lot of other diseases so we want to raise awareness,” she said.
Bonnie said students began organising the fund-raiser after the school’s maintenance worker Ashley Gillin spoke to a class about his two sons with MD, Chris and Aaron.
“It was the most attentive I’ve ever seen our year level,” she said.
Chris, a former Brauer student, said it was important for people to learn more about the physical disease.
“Mentally we’re no different to everyone else,” he said.
Funds raised during National Superhero Week will support MDA services and research by the National Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre in Melbourne.
