A Coleraine officer intercepted a car for a routine check on Tuesday at 7.36pm.
The passenger in the car, a man aged in his 60s, is alleged to have got out of the car and pushed the police officer.
Back-up police members arrived and there was then an incident with the man allegedly throwing punches and assaulting all three police officers.
The man was subdued with capsicum spray, arrested and taken to the Hamilton Base Hospital for assessment and treatment.
He was then placed in the Hamilton police cells due to his level of intoxication and later interviewed.
The man has been charged with assaulting police and released on bail to appear in the Hamilton Magistrates Court on October 14.
The driver of the vehicle, a Coleraine man in his late 30s, has been charged and bailed with drink driving and other offences.
