As a recreational fisherman and boatie, another is the lack of action at Warrnambool’s harbour over decades.
The two are inter-connected, the millions driving past are other fisherman on the hunt for southern blue fin tuna which frequent the waters of the south-west during the colder winter months.
Mr Ludeman says tourists drive through Warrnambool, heading to Port Fairy or Portland, because launching facilities in Warrnambool are unpredictable and put expensive boats at risk of damage.
“It just seems to be going over the same ground,” Mr Ludeman said of the latest plans for upgrade.
“There have been major studies done in the ‘80 and ‘90s. They all suggested a groyne and a spur off the breakwater.
“That’s what should have already happened, and what should be happening now.”
Mr Ludeman said Warrnambool was the only coastal city that didn’t have safer launching facilities and it was missing out economically.
“These guys come down for three or four days,” he said.
“They buy fuel, food, ice and book accommodation. They bring their families who spend money in the shops.
“It’s millions of dollars that could be coming to Warrnambool businesses in the traditionally quieter months of the year.”
