Roos coach Jarrod Holt was thrilled with defender Josh Pepper and forward Ryan Newell, praising the pair for their performances in the two-point defeat at Melville Oval.
Pepper restricted dangerous Bloods forward Chris Bant to two goals, while Newell was a threat in attack, booting a season-high five majors.
Holt said Pepper limited Bant’s effectiveness on the lead.
“We thought Josh, with his good closing speed and competitiveness, was a good match-up (for Bant),” he said.
“Every time we’ve played them, he’s got on top of us and killed us, so that was a good win for us.”
Holt said Newell gave the Roos another dimension in attack. Swingman Hugh Douglas was resolute in defence after starting in attack.
