THREE horse riders tracking the journey their forefathers took to enlist in World War I passed through Barnawartha and Wodonga yesterday.
The Corryong trio started their trip at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance on April 14 and will have covered more than 500 kilometres by the time they reach Corryong.
The “100 Year Ride Back” is part of the Corryong Neighbourhood Centre’s Anzac Centenary commemorations.
The riders set up camp at a Bonegilla property last night, ahead of their ride to Jingellic today and Corryong tomorrow.
“It’s been great and I have really enjoyed people sharing their family’s stories about war,” Bridget Waters said.
Visit the 100 YEARS OF ANZACS page for social media, video and written tributes to our war heroes from across the nation.
The nine-day journey has covered distances similar to that within a daily ride for members of the Light Horse.
“Australia has such a rich history with the Light Horse and this journey gives some of those families closure,” Ms Waters said.
“I had three relatives serve in World War I and only two came back.
“We are retracing the steps of my ancestors and all those who didn’t come home after the war.”
Ms Waters, 19, has been joined by Heidi and Mark Walton, who have been training for seven months for the marathon ride.
Mrs Walton has been carrying a lantern that she lit from the eternal flame at the Shrine of Remembrance.
