The Timor Street team was forced to work hard for its 71-64 grand final triumph over arch rival City Memorial Gold in front of a healthy crowd at Port Fairy. The two teams scored one rink win each and drew the third.
But Kellie Bowles’ 32-20 victory against Catherine Hoy proved the catalyst for Warrnambool Gold.
The Victorian representative teamed with Bev Hayes, Judi Smith and Margaret Quinn to produce the match-winning result.
Brenda Hawker played a key role for Warrnambool Gold with a 20-all draw against Denise Hillier.
City Gold veteran Dorothy Gleeson tried hard to swing momentum her side’s way, downing Gill Vorwerk 22-17.
All bar one of the Warrnambool Gold players had played in a winning division one grand final for the club before.
Vorwerk, who joined the club from Mount Gambier this season, added her name to its long list of premiership players.
Bowles, back in the Tuesday pennant side after a stint in the Saturday competition, missed out on the 2013-14 title.
“The women have been a really, really good support to me this year and they’ve welcomed me back with open arms and it was lovely to be part of their team,” Bowles said. “You play for your rink, you play for your teammates.
“That is what I play for. That’s what everyone plays for.” Helen Lock, who skippered at times throughout the campaign, said she’d cherish the win. I’ll go to bingo happy,” she said of her weekly Tuesday night games.
“It is very special to win back-to-back. It’s been years and years since Warrnambool have won it back-to-back. The others are really out to beat you — you’re the reigning premier and they’re out to beat you — that’s the main reason (it’s so hard to do).It was very high quality. They have very good players, City Memorial Gold.”
