Hampden Football Netball League chief executive officer Mike Farrow yesterday revealed the Murray league had committed to fielding a representative under-age side for the May 23 clash at Reid Oval.
It’s the first time in three years the Hampden league’s senior football opponent has opted to field an under-age team.
Hampden took a side, including Essendon draftee Martin Gleeson, to Shepparton for a match against Murray in 2011 and the following year it and rival Ovens and Murray played an under 18 curtain-raiser at Carlton’s Princes Park.
Farrow said the league was delighted Murray had agreed to the under 18½ match.
The Hampden league will discuss plans for the match with its clubs at a forum. Farrow said the league would need to advertise for a coach.
Farrow said the HFNL was likely to open the day with the under 18½ match, followed by a shorter match between all-abilities sides Hampden Hurricanes and Hamilton Boomers and then the showdown between Hampden and Murray at senior level.
He revealed under 14 and under 16 netball matches would be played for the first time by Hampden league players. “Because the under 14 and under 16 netballers don’t have any representative games, we are looking at getting two teams together so we will have a real day of it, footy and netball,” Farrow said.
The league has applied to Warrnambool City Council to hold the match at Reid Oval but is waiting approval.
