Police were called to Bentinck Street after the two shots were heard near the Glenelg Street intersection about 8pm.
A crime scene was set up around the area but no one was injured in the incident, according to Inspector Paul Ross.
He told The Standard yesterday a Portland resident was assisting police with inquiries.
