Deakin marine biology and ecology senior lecturer Alecia Bellgrove told the students fish were slimy to make it difficult for bacteria and parasites to attach to them.
That slice of information was provided during the dissection of Atlantic salmon, one of the activities held at the Warrnambool campus yesterday as part of an oopen day aimed at snaring prospective students.
The campus’ science, arts/associate, business/law and health/education faculties each ran activities during the day to give students an idea of the many fields of study available at the campus and where those qualifications could take them.
More than 140 students from the Warrnambool, Brauer, Mortlake and Portland colleges took part.
