Motorists frequently parked in Kruger Street if parking closer to the hospital was not available, leading residents to issue a petition calling for congestion in their neighbourhood to be eased.
The council was presented with a recommendation on Monday night to introduce two-hour limited parking between Ryot and Murray streets.
However, Warrnambool mayor Michael Neoh put forward an alternative motion to make parking along the section of Kruger Street resident-only.
“This was introduced as a solution to a particular problem — it’s not something that will be introduced throughout Warrnambool,” Cr Neoh said.
Cr Peter Hulin said the issue highlighted the municipality’s poor handling of parking problems around the base hospital.
“The facts are that when the council donated $300,000 to (cancer centre campaign) Peter’s Project, we as a council said we’d set aside a substantial funding pool for extra parking around the hospital. Yet now, it’s only $25,000 — how is that planning for the future?”
