The tearaway leader Saturday Sorcerer hung on to beat Pretty Blonde and Lightinthenite in the 2000-metre race, while Smarty Mac ran fifth for his owners, who include Kristal Primmer, of Warrnambool.
Constant Force’s trainer Symon Wilde said the eight-year-old had a slow recovery rate following breakneck pace in the feature race of the Darwin Cup Carnival.
“I thought Constant Force had travelled really well in the run,”Wilde said.
“I was happy where he was at the 600-metre mark. I thought we would fight it out once we got to the home turn but we just never went to the line strongly.
“Constant Force usually finishes his races off strongly but he never did it today.”
Constant Force won last year’s Kyneton Cup in November and Wilde said the race would be on the agenda again this year.
Smarty Mac was well back early and in the middle stages of the race before finishing strongly to be beaten less than three lengths.
