Author Kevin Reed is a former senior lecturer in education at Deakin University and he has put together the book entitled From the Goldfields to the ’G — A One-Eyed Look at Australian Rules.
The book was a point of discussion on the ABC’s The Coodabeen Champions last Saturday and the publication tells the story of Australian rules football from the perspective of the Reed family’s involvement across five generations.
Reed and his sons Timothy and Brendan were involved with footy in Warrnambool during the family’s 16 years in the city.
Reed was a field umpire while Tim was a member of South Warrnambool’s 1984 under 18 premiership team alongside Wayne Schwass and Stephen Anderson and was later a captain of the Deakin University Sharks, where his brother Brendan also played.
The book’s introduction was written by well-known former St Kilda and Melbourne rover Dr Paul Callery, who wrote that it was a unique account of the development of Australian rules in both rural and suburban Victoria.
The launch will be held at Warrnambool’s City Memorial Bowls Club next Tuesday.
