Clang And Dazzle, an impressive winner at his last start at Warrnambool last month, was an acceptor for a $30,000 race over 1800 metres at Morphettville today but Julius decided to scratch the five-year-old in search of a wet track and more ground.
“I really want to run him over 2000 metres , that’s why he’s in at Flemington,” he said.
“I would prefer a wetter racing surface but we’re not going to get that at Flemington. They have an excellent drainage system at Flemington. If the track is rated a dead five I reckon we’ll run.”
Julius, who has five horses in work, is also stable foreman for fellow Warrnambool trainer Aaron Purcell.
He said training was his passion and preferred profession but being a horse dentist was a good back-up.
“I wanted to get a trade behind me if the training venture failed so that’s why I do horse dentistry on the side. I’m really enjoying mixing the different facets of racing which I’m involved with at this stage. It’s all a bit of a balancing act but I like it.
“Clang And Dazzle was bred by my grandparents Leo and Maureen Dwyer. I started looking after the horse after my auntie Anne McGrath underwent treatment for breast cancer. My grandparents and the other owners decided to leave Clang And Dazzle with me when I got my trainer’s licence.”
Seven Falls, trained by Ciaron Maher, resumes in a $80,000 three-year-old race over 1000 metres today.
The lightly-raced colt won on debut at Mornington in December last year before failing at Moonee Valley.
