The festival committee has announced the recipients of its $58,540 first round of community funding for 2014.
Eight groups have been successful, the biggest allocations going to the Port Fairy SES unit which will receive up to $30,000 towards the purchase of a new rescue truck.
The Port Fairy Film Society is a step closer to ensuring new-release films can be shown in the town thanks to a $10,000 contribution.
The money will go towards the purchase of new digital cinema equipment needed for the society to be able to show new films at the Reardon Theatre during summer.
The film society needs $55,000 in total and the Folk Festival funding comes on top of $12,000 raised by the society and $6000 from the Isobel and David Jones Family Foundation.
There is also a need to raise a further $12,000 to upgrade the projection room in preparation for the new equipment.
Other funding went to the Friends of St Brigid’s with $5000 for an amenities upgrade, $4100 to Moyne Health for a rehabilitation treadmill, $3125 to the Port Fairy Football Netball Club for its fun run, $2500 for the Ex Libris words and music project, $2000 to the Port Fairy library for its Letters to the Front project and $1815 to St Patrick’s Primary School towards the purchase of two defibrillators.
Port Fairy Folk Festival treasurer Bernie Waixel said the community grants covered a good range of groups.
“We are happy that we have been able to help groups in the community with some very worthy projects,” Mr Waixel said. Another round of grants will be announced in November.
