The inaugural Koroit Food Swap will be held from 10am tomorrow at Sacred Stones in Commercial Road.
The event will involve people bringing along home-grown produce such as fresh fruit and vegetables or preserves, jams and relishes produced from the bounty of their own garden or paddock.
No money changes hands at the food swap, with people who bring in food able to then take home other food they may need.
One of the organisers, Loretta Gurnett, said she first read about the food swap concept online.
“I knew it was something I wanted to get involved in. I am involved in food swap in Warrnambool and when I spoke about it to a few people in Koroit we thought it would be worth giving a try here,” Ms Gurnett said.
“We are encouraging people to come along and join in. We want people to feel comfortable to come along.”
Ms Gurnett said the event also gave people a chance to swap ideas, seedlings, recipes and knowledge about growing, eating and cooking home-made produce.
She said Koroit’s reputation as a strong agricultural area made it a perfect location for a food swap. “In the street I live in Koroit everyone has a vegetable garden or chooks or ducks, it is just such great soil here, so fertile.
“We are hoping the food swap will encourage people to get out and grow even more of their own food and share what they don’t want with the community.”
The food swap is expected to continue on the third Saturday of each month.
