DANISH blue was not on the tasting plate at Allansford’s Cheeseworld yesterday but Copenhagen’s man in Australia still had plenty of praise for domestic dairy production.

With a wintry south-west experiencing conditions reminiscent of a Scandinavian summer, Danish ambassador Børge Petersen visited the dairy-themed tourist attraction as part of a Great Ocean Road tour with his wife Jytte.
After carrying out significant research into Australia’s agricultural sector, Mr Petersen said he wanted to visit Warrnambool Cheese and Butter due to its standing as one of Australia’s top milk processors.
“I am a farmer’s son, so the dairy industry is of great interest to me,” the ambassador said.
“We’re driving between Geelong and Adelaide and we’re keen to see the Twelve Apostles.
“As soon as the (Great Ocean) road turned inland, we noticed how vast the dairy farms are compared to Denmark. Danish farm houses and dairies are located close together and there are far more smaller houses located in between each farm.
“That’s one of the great freedoms of Australian farming — there’s so much space!”
Mr and Mrs Petersen toured the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter factory before crossing the road to sample some mouth-watering morsels at Cheeseworld.
