Head warden Kevin Harris said two stained glass windows depicting Christian figures and two leadlight windows had been smashed overnight Monday.
“It looks like someone has stuck a jemmy bar through the windows. If it was a stone they would have been found inside the church,” Mr Harris said.
“Something has certainly been stuck through them. The stained glass windows have been there for a long, long time.”
Mr Harris said he was at a loss to explain why anyone would damage the church.
“It’s very disappointing. I would loved to have been behind whoever did it with a whip when it was happening. You do wonder why anyone would do such a thing. There has to be something wrong with someone who would damage a church.”
Port Fairy policeman Senior Constable Glenn McDuff asked anyone with information about the damage contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Port Fairy police station.
“There was an attempted break-in at the church overnight Monday which was unsuccessful,” he said.
“The damage has been caused to the windows which will require extensive historic restoration work. We’re estimating the damage at $5000.
“The church was locked at 5pm Monday and the damage discovered at 9am this morning,” he said.
